Boiler Servicing: Why Is It Important?

An annual boiler service can keep you safe and save you money

Many people consider boiler servicing an unnecessary expense. In fact, a study conducted by uSwitch in 2013 revealed that 1 in 10 households (approx. 2 million homes in the UK) have never had their boiler serviced. However, if you miss out on your annual service, you could end up with a boiler that is dangerous, unreliable and expensive to run.

Check out the info below to find out exactly why regular boiler servicing is important.

Why Is Annual Boiler Servicing Important?

There are three key reasons for booking an annual boiler service:

  1. Safety:  If your boiler is not combusting properly it may be giving off toxic carbon monoxide fumes. You cannot taste, smell or see carbon monoxide, so if your boiler is emitting this dangerous gas, you may not realise until it is too late. During your service the engineer will check your boiler for dangerous leaks, as well as spotting and fixing any potential issues before they become a problem.

  2. Efficiency: Boiler efficiency declines over time, as the boiler gets older and parts become clogged with debris. During your annual boiler service, the engineer will service all of the boiler’s parts, clean out your system and replace any broken components. This will make your boiler more efficient which can help to cut your heating bills, as an inefficient boiler uses more fuel.

  1. Reliability: Your boiler, like all mechanical devices, it is subject to wear and tear over time. When it is running at full capacity during the winter months, there is more strain placed on the parts inside the boiler. Because of this, it is more likely to breakdown during winter, leaving you and your family in the cold. A qualified engineer can help to prevent these breakdowns, by making sure that your boiler is in tip-top condition all year round.

Who Should Service Your Boiler?

Gas Boilers: By law, a gas boiler service should be conducted by a Gas Safe registered engineer (you can find more information about Gas Safe engineers and the Gas Safe Register here).

Oil Boilers: For an oil boiler service, we strongly recommend that you use a trained, OFTEC registered engineer to conduct your service, as they will be up-to-date on recent safety regulations.

How Much Does an Annual Boiler Service Cost?

The cost of a boiler service is determined by several things. The type of boiler you have, the fuel you use and the number of engineers in an area can all affect how much a service will cost. For this reason, the easiest way to get an accurate idea of how much your boiler service will cost, is to compare quotes from local engineers.
