Domestic boilers account for approximately 55% of total household yearly energy bills and, with modern boilers offering much better efficiencies, boiler replacement grants offer an easy way to save money and reduce emissions. It is estimated that a typical household could save up to £300 per year by replacing their old boiler with an ‘A’ rated modern condensing boiler.
The government has two primary boiler replacement grants available across the UK:
The Green Deal
The Green Deal is a grant based scheme available to all householders not claiming benefits. This scheme provides up-front payments of up to £10000 for energy efficiency improvements for the home including replacement boilers. The boiler replacement grant grant is paid back via the energy bill from the savings made from the installation of energy saving measures. There is an initial survey which is chargeable but, once this has been carried out, there are no further up-front costs.
The Energy Company Obligation (ECO)
The Energy Company Obligation scheme is a requirement of the six major energy companies in the UK to reduce fuel poverty amongst low income and vulnerable households. ECO offers boiler replacement grants to householders claiming benefits and the criteria for eligibility are very strict. It is estimated that 2.5 million households in the UK may be eligible for the boiler replacement grant. Unlike The Green Deal, there is no payback so the home owner will start to gain immediately. ECO can also be used for other forms of energy efficiency improvements such as insulation.
