7 Easy Ways to Save Money by Improving Your Boiler Efficiency

While boiler efficiency isn’t necessarily a priority for most homeowners, making sure that your boiler is in tip-top condition is extremely important. As well as being more reliable and safer in general, having an efficient boiler can help you to save money on your energy bills, as it will use less fuel to heat your home than an inefficient boiler.

According to figures released by the Energy Saving Trust, around 55% of your home energy costs are related to your boiler. Luckily, there are a number of easy steps you can take to make your boiler as efficient as possible - check out our useful tips for some simple solutions!

1) Book an Annual Service

During a boiler service, the engineer will make sure that your boiler is in good working condition, clean out debris and check for any problems that could cause future issues or breakdowns.

2) Use an Expert

When you book a boiler service or repair, always make sure that you use a Gas Safe or OFTEC qualified engineer. Both of these professional bodies regularly test their engineers to make sure that they are up to standard on the best work practises and safety regulations.

3) Add an Additive

If you have an oil boiler, one of the easiest ways to improve its efficiency is to add a heating oil additive to your oil. As well as upgrading your fuel, additives help to prevent tank sludge, reduce costly breakdowns and improve the overall efficiency of your system.

4) Summer Sessions

Although you may not tend to use your central heating system as much during summer, you should run your boiler for at least 10 to 15 minutes each month. This will stop any mechanical parts from seizing up, and will allow you to check that your system is working efficiently for winter.

5) Watch Out

Regularly check your boiler and any associated areas (i.e. radiators or oil tanks) for leaks, discolouration or damage. If you notice anything unusual, contact an engineer as soon as possible.

6) Check the Age

If your boiler is more than 10 years old you may find that the energy efficiency rating is much lower than that of a modern boiler. If this is the case, you might want to consider replacing your boiler with a more efficient one.

7) Bleed Your Radiators

By removing the air from your system, you can ensure that your boiler isn't working harder than necessary to heat your home.
